Understanding an essay and what is being asked of you can be difficult, especially your first essay in university. Lecturers will often highlight what they expect the contents of your essay to have, however it happens quite often that you have to do all of the research on a topic that you know nothing about. In any case, there are steps that you can take along the way that aid and improve your ability to write an academic essay or paper.

1st – Understand what the key components of the essay are. What are your key words? If your task a report, a study, a critique?

Hey Guys,

So finals are coming up soon, sounds scary and stressful right? Well the mentors have come up with some advice and a few tips on how to prepare for the exams, it really isn’t as bad as you think!

  • Start studying as early as possible. Tempting as it is to leave it until study week, you don't want to be left cramping a semester's worth of information into a few days.
  • 10 minutes off! Every 50 minutes of studying, get a 10 minute break and spend it doing something even if it’s just a walk or looking out the window. You’ll feel much better and ready to go back at the books.

Hey everyone,

Where has the time gone to? We’ve now hit week 8 of the semester, a time where exams are looming, assignment due dates are getting closer, and it feels like there aren’t enough hours in the day to keep everything going! With no Mammy to keep after you to ensure all the deadlines are met, the mentors have come up with some helpful tips to ensure efficient use and management of your time!

Firstly, it might be helpful to make a large plan of assignments, study, events, etc.

So exam time and assignment deadlines are getting closer and stress levels are probably high. I know I felt quiet stressed and everything seemed to be piling up on me and I honestly have had thoughts over the two years I’ve been here of just giving up. So I am going to give you some tips which helped me tackle exams and assignments, they might not work for you but it is always worth a try.

 

Here are some of the tips I have to offer:

  • I recommend you get a calendar (which you can get for free in the SU office) and fill in all your deadlines and when your exams are.
