Understanding an essay and what is being asked of you can be difficult, especially your first essay in university. Lecturers will often highlight what they expect the contents of your essay to have, however it happens quite often that you have to do all of the research on a topic that you know nothing about. In any case, there are steps that you can take along the way that aid and improve your ability to write an academic essay or paper.

1st – Understand what the key components of the essay are. What are your key words? If your task a report, a study, a critique?

Hey Guys,

So finals are coming up soon, sounds scary and stressful right? Well the mentors have come up with some advice and a few tips on how to prepare for the exams, it really isn’t as bad as you think!

  • Start studying as early as possible. Tempting as it is to leave it until study week, you don't want to be left cramping a semester's worth of information into a few days.
  • 10 minutes off! Every 50 minutes of studying, get a 10 minute break and spend it doing something even if it’s just a walk or looking out the window. You’ll feel much better and ready to go back at the books.

Hey everyone,

Where has the time gone to? We’ve now hit week 8 of the semester, a time where exams are looming, assignment due dates are getting closer, and it feels like there aren’t enough hours in the day to keep everything going! With no Mammy to keep after you to ensure all the deadlines are met, the mentors have come up with some helpful tips to ensure efficient use and management of your time!

Firstly, it might be helpful to make a large plan of assignments, study, events, etc.

I normally have a fairly good idea of what's going on, what date it is, basic things like that, but when my lecturer announced yesterday that this is week 7 it took me totally by surprise. The weeks are flying past and before we know it we're going to be up on top of exams again! I had a fairly quiet start to semester 2. I didn't have many assignments and not a huge work load. However that was just the calm before the storm because suddenly I've been bombarded with essays and projects that have fast approaching deadlines.

It seems like only a handful of weeks since college started and you've just realised that exams are in about four weeks - cue panic! But you're not alone. No matter how confident someone claims to be about the impending exams, everyone is going to be at least a small bit stressed about them. This is my third time facing Christmas exams in college and my third time (not including summer exam-time) procrastinating until the last minute when I realise that time really is running out, so I'm somewhat of an expert in the area of procrastination.
