“When I was younger, so much younger than today

I never needed anybody’s help in any way,

But now those days are gone, I’m not so self-assured,

Now I find I’ve changed my mind and opened up the doors.

Help me if you can, I’m feeling down”

Everyone needs help sometimes. The services at NUIG are super friendly, so don’t be afraid to use them! There is a huge amount of variety - ranging from financial help to free GP visits at the health unit.  Don't forget that if you're struggling, NUIG has measures in place to help you.  This blog post is just to highlight the different services available for students.  We’ve included links to their websites where you can easily find their contact information and opening hours.

Chaplaincy/Counselling:  If you're having any problems settling in or making friends the chaplaincy is a great place to go they're always there to lend an ear. If you prefer something without the religious undertones the student counselling service offer 6 week courses of counselling that can really help you with anything you're struggling with, no matter how major or minor you think it is.

Health unit: One of the great student services is the free health clinic, next to the SU in Aras na Mac leinn. It's done on a first come first served basis, so if you're not feeling well, you should try and get in there early. You first get seen to by a nurse, and if whatever is ailin' you is more serious, she sends you into the doctor. It's a great service, and we are lucky to have it as most universities have to pay each time they go. So definitely make sure to use it if you need to!

Career Development Centre: A lot of people forget that the Career Development Centre is even there. It's a good resource for CV building, interview preparation which is really useful for applying for internships etc. while in college (as well as 'real' jobs when in final year).

Accommodation Office: Most of you are probably well settled in at this point, but the Accommodation Office (first floor of Aras Ui Cathail) is there to help with any problems you might be having with your landlord or accommodation searching for next semester/next year.

Finance Office: It can be all too easy to buy those extra drinks on nights out in first year.  You don’t want to be left tight for food money. The finance office is around (first floor of Aras Ui Cathail) to help you budget.  They also offer advice on any applications for financial support/ funding while in college.

And remember! You can always contact you Student Connect Mentors if you’re ever struggling! :D
