When the New Year rolls around, everyone usually takes a step back to revaluate their choices over the past year, and typically decide to make some ‘new year’s resolutions’. Now I’ll be the first one to raise my hand and admit that I failed miserably at my resolutions this year, and we’re not even a month in! However, I also think that there’s no need to place yourself into a position where you’re forcing yourself to take on too many resolutions at once. You don’t need to jump right into new activities or routines, mindsets or the new ‘Lean in 15’ diet. Start small, and start with what makes you comfortable. At the beginning of semester two, the big shock is jumping back into college work after a long month off for the Christmas holidays. It’s a mad year of new beginnings, and it takes quite a while to fully adjust to college life. The following are places you can turn to when things aren’t the best, for whatever reason that may be. Each service outlined, in its own way, is there to support you, to help you with anything you might need help with.First things first: health. It’s frightening how many students have said to me that they’re ignoring blatant health problems because they can’t afford to see a doctor. Though it’s overused, I feel the proverb “your health is your wealth” is greatly underappreciated by students – this in terms of both physical and mental health. Mental Health is something that affects everyone of us. Just like we look after our bodies, so too must we be kind to our minds. Stress is a big part of any college student's life and if not managed properly with the right support, it's easy to let it get out of hand. College can be overwhelming sometimes, with assignment deadlines and exams and the like. Throughout your college career and indeed the rest of your life, you will experience ups and downs, highs and lows, good times and bad. While we all enjoy the good times, it is important that we acknowledge the bad times and the feelings that come with them. Knowing how to process these feelings and get through whatever has us down is what good mental health is all about. Hi Guys, So this weeks topic is on a more serious note. Your mental health. Looking after your mental health is paramount in university in order to perform at your best and in order to thoroughly enjoy the full college experience. Often ‘mental health’ and ‘mental ill health’ are confused. Many people perceive them to be the same things however, caring for our mental health does not need to mean that we are unwell in any way. Together with the mentors we have come up with some advice and suggestions for if things are getting too much. Firstly is to talk about the things that are getting you down or weighing on your mind. Having a friend or family member listen to what you have to say can really ease the burden. A problem shared is a problem halved. Not all problems can be solved alone.
